Career Research: Evaluating Websites

Learn about different careers for your informative speech.

Using a Website as a Source

  • You may need to turn to the internet to find more updated information about a research topic or about something you simply want to learn more about.  If this is the case, you will want to make sure that you are evaluating the websites you are using to ensure they are credible and providing accurate information.  You can do this by using The 7 Layers of Website Evaluation method (which is explained in detail below) in addition to using the technique of Lateral Reading to learn more about an online source.

  • Another option is to use a specialized search engine that filters websites for you, providing you search results that are credible.  The HFHS Library has one such search engine called WebPath Express, which can be accessed through our online library catalog or by clicking the link below.

Evaluating Websites

As you conduct your research, you may want to use a website as one of your sources.  Remember to use the 7 Layers of Website Evaluation to help evaluate the website.

The 7 Layers of Website Evaluation InfoGraphic was created based on Indian Prairie District 204's Research Handbook. The District 204 Research Handbook is a joint project between the Metea, Neuqua, and Waubonsie High School LMCs.
